Ames High Students Decompose Their Way to a Better Environment
Ames High Junior, Taylor Gwiasda
The Ames High Environmental Science Department is working on a lab about decomposition. Mike Todd is the teacher of this class and had his students chose items they wanted to decompose. To the left is a picture of Taylor Gwiasda weighing her project to compare data once the project is finished. A goal of this project is to show the students what all goes into a landfill and how long it takes to decompose. I asked Taylor Gwiasda what she's learned so far while doing this lab, Taylor said "I've learned that a lot of what I think will decompose quickly, like newpaper, actually takes tens of years to fully decompose" "It makes me want to re-think what I put into my garbage can" The students in the class are required to take time-lapse photos every day to make a final product that will be like a movie, showing the decomposition through the entire course of the lab. This will show what decomposes the fastest, what takes the longest and the different steps items go through until they are completely decomposed. Hopefully the students will take what they learn in class and apply it to there own life and the lives of others
